Cars, trucks, and SUVs use and create multiple liquid substances. Here’s what you need to know about the puddle of liquid under your vehicle, from Dempsey's Service Center, Inc. in Newark, DE. There are a few different substances that can pool under an automobile, and some are more serious than others. Knowing what to look for and what to do could save you from hassle with your vehicle in the long run.

Oil - Oil leaks are pretty common, and can come from a variety of places, some more problematic than others. The oil will be black or brown, sort of thick, and feels oily to the touch. If there’s a lot of oil, get it taken care of as soon as possible - if it’s just a drip, it can most likely wait until your next service. Be sure to keep an eye on the oil level, to keep your engine safe.

Transmission Fluid - Transmission fluid is typically a reddish color, but could be brown depending on the vehicle and situation. The color can be a bit difficult to distinguish if it’s out of direct sunlight and when it’s on the ground. Leaking transmission fluid can come from transmission lines, an oil pan gasket, or a bad seal. Much like an engine, some are easy to fix and some are far more difficult. Make sure your transmission fluid level stays where it belongs until you are able to get it to the shop. A lack of transmission fluid will also cause odd transmission behavior and can ruin one quickly.

Coolant - Coolant is typically green or orange, but it can often be difficult to tell. Coolant is watery but does have an oily sort of feel to it. If your engine is leaking coolant, check the coolant level (be certain the engine is cold first!!) and make sure it’s topped off before bringing it to the shop. Coolant leaks need to be dealt with immediately - they can get worse at any moment, and cause your vehicle to overheat in a matter of minutes. Get it taken care of as soon as you notice a problem.

Water - If water is collecting or dripping under your vehicle, it’s probably happening while the engine is running with the air conditioner turned on. If that’s the case, then congratulations - your car is fine. Water drips from the engine compartment from cold AC components, as it condenses from the hot air surrounding it. Nothing to worry about!
