Good tire maintenance is important. At Dempsey's Service Center, Inc. in Newark, we know how to make tires last, and why it’s important to service them regularly. An easy and effective aspect of tire maintenance is correct air pressure; here’s what you need to know.
You may have noticed a low tire, or simply haven’t checked them in a while. It’s a good idea to check your tire pressure about once a month, especially if the weather has changed recently, assuming your tires hold air properly. If you do happen to have a slow leak, keep a close eye on it...a leak that needs attention once a week can turn into a once a day problem at any moment, leaving you stranded.
Tires with low pressure wear out much more quickly and negatively affect your gas mileage as well. Over inflating them can also be a problem, however. So how do you know what the correct air pressure is supposed to be?
The recommended air pressure for most cars, trucks, and SUVs is around 32 or 34 PSI. For precise figures, there are typically three places you can check. Somewhere on your vehicle, usually on a sticker inside the driver’s side door jamb, the recommended inflation pressure for your tires will be printed. Your owner’s manual will also have this information. If neither of these is available, the tires themselves will have the recommended pressure stamped into them, somewhere on the sidewall. Next, read the pressure with a tire gauge, or with your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system if it’s equipped with one. Inflate or deflate your tires as necessary.
Or, ask one of the expert mechanics at Dempsey's Service Center, Inc. to check them for you, next time you come in for an oil change. Our technicians will also inspect your tires for wear, dry-rot, and damage, and can repair leaking tires or faulty valve stems. For all your repair and maintenance needs, call or come by Dempsey's Service Center, Inc. at any time. We’ve got you covered.
